Our school
Our
school got its name from the teacher „Ursula-Kuhr“ who died in 1964.
She, an other teacher, and 8 children were killed in an attempted assassination
by an assailant with a flame-projector.
Our
school is situated in a suburb in the north of Cologne. Many of our
students´ parents are out of work, and so a lot of families are
supported by social aid.
About
a quarter of our students are from foreign countries. – in former years
mostly from Turkey but nowadays from more than 13 different countries.
Therefore
all the colleagues decided to look for new ways of intercultural teaching.
That means advantages for the foreign students as well as for our German
students. So they can find a better way to understand the cultural differences.
We
think one possibility is teaching in projects, in which our students
can combine practical and cognitive skills. Our students no longer learn
singeled subjects but they learn in bigger contexts.
Some
of those projects were “Everything around the potato”, “H2O
– we really need you”, “2000 – I take my future in both hands”, and
“Bedlam-Museum-UKS - students of Cologne discover Cologne museums”.
The
most importand aims of our Secondary Modern School are
- to
educate our students in general
- to
help them to act in freedom
- to
enable them to think critically
- to
show them how to behave in self-responsibility
- and
to prepare them for the demands of employment
